The Bed Song

I first heard the Bed Song last Thursday, Valentine's Day, when it premiered and it has stuck with me for the whole week.  Amanda's lyrics have a way of leaving you vulnerable and broken.  It's not just a song about a sexless marriage, but rather a lack of intimacy.  Sex and intimacy often go hand-in-hand, but they are not exclusive of each other.   There is nothing worse than being in a relationship and feeling utterly alone and yet I'm certain it has happened to us all at one time or another.  Sometimes it's just for a season, for others, life.

No relationship ever begins emotionally distant, at least I should hope not.  How do you keep the passion alive, the communication flowing?  And if you cannot do these things, how do you know when it's time to leave?

I am honestly asking.  I don't have the answers. I myself have been guilty of keeping the question "what was the matter?" balled up in my brain for far too long and what works for one couple does not work for them all.  Yet, I still find those questions important ones to ask.  Maybe they will promote discussion to keep the unhealthy, festering questions away.

The Bed Song is just one of those songs that makes you want to run to your lover and hold him or her tight.  In honor of intimacy, of little surprises, and growing closer together, I present...

PANCAKES!  

Bake them as a surprise or better yet, bake them with your loved ones.  It's the little things that keep mediocrity at bay, not grand gestures sponsored by some corporate holiday.

Breakfast in Bed Cinnamon Pancakes
Slightly adapted from The Idea Room

 Ingredients:
~Batter
1 c unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon (optional)

1 1/2 c buttermilk
2 Tbsp butter
1 egg 
1 Tbsp honey

~Cinnamon Paste
2 Tbsp melted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp flour
1/2 tsp milk

1. Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and butter together in a large bowl.  Once butter is sufficiently mixed into the dry ingredients, add buttermilk, egg, and honey.

I added a bit of cinnamon to give the pancake itself more flavor. 

2. Lightly grease your pan with butter and preheat it.

3. Prepare the cinnamon paste by mixing the ingredients together.  Add flour and milk in small quantities as needed to get a consistency similar to that of the pancake batter. 

For my batch of pancakes the first mixture was too lumpy, the second far too runny, but the third was juuuuusssst right.

4. Place the cinnamon paste into a pastry bag.  If no pastry bag is available you can use a ziplock baggies with a bit of the corner snipped off.  

5. Pour your batter into small pancakes on the preheated pan.  Immediately add the cinnamon swirls.


This step is VERY important.  For years I have been omitting flour from the cinnamon paste and waiting to add the swirl till right before the pancakes is ready to flip.  This results in pancakes riddled with butter crannies and a very sticky, but likely sweet, pan.  

6. Cook pancakes until small bubbles form on the topside of the pancake.  You can also check the bottom side of the pancake by gently lifting up an edge with a spatula.

7.  Flip over the pancake with a spatula and cook for another minute or until golden brown.

Voila! Breakfast is served and marriages are saved! Well, as long as you remember to clean up the kitchen after...

There has been little action in the garden lately.  The seedlings are off to a good start inside, the radishes are chugging along in the garden, and there's not a whole lot that needs done between now and Labour Day.   It's actually rather boring. Coolest Little Zoo

We have been living in Wellington for almost a year, but for some reason we never found the time to visit the Wellington Zoo in Newtown. Now that we are both off work for the holidays we planned a visit, made easier by a buy-one-get-one offer from the Absolutely Positively Wellington Advent Calendar. We felt we had pretty high expectations as I grew up with the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and Seth has visited the San Diego zoo in the past. We can say with absolute certainty that Wellington Zoo is indeed the best little zoo in the world.   The trip was off to a wonderful start with the first animal on display being the little blue penguin. It's hard to compete with penguins, especially ones as cute as a little blue. The zoo only got progressively better as we moved on to the kiwi exhibit. onion update.

 Just 7 days from replanting our onion scraps and they have begun to regrow!   I wasn't expecting much from this experiment, so seeing the little bit of green is quite encouraging.  Once the leaves are a bit longer I will return the onion to the main garden and bury the bulb.     In other exciting garden news, after 33 days the courgettes are finally sprouting and in quite a fabulous fashion.  This is my first time growing courgettes and I was surprised at the size of their cotyledons.  It looks as though the pie pumpkin seeds may be preparing to push through the soil soon, too.   Most seeds need warmth, not sunlight, to germinate.  I was originally starting my seeds in the sunroom.  Though sunny, the room does not provide adequate heating unless it's a cloudless day.  I have since moved the seed starting trays to the warmest part of the house.  Once they sprout I move them into the sunroom so they can get enough sun....
